In July 2000 NMHC/NAA launched a major advocacy campaign in support of a more balanced housing policy. Through outreach to state, local and federal policymakers, NMHC/NAA are urging policymakers to recognize the importance of apartments and rental housing instead of focusing exclusively on initiatives to expand the homeownership rate.

The centerpiece of this new effort is an easy-to-read, four-color brochure that incorporates third party testimonials and profiles of nontraditional residents to deliver our policy message. The publication points out that as America's population has become more diverse, the goal of homeownership has become less universal than it once was and that, for many, renting better fits their modern lifestyles. In addition, it details five general principles that should serve as the basis of a smarter housing policy.
