Housing 2015 Isn't Houston 1980s Experts Tell NMHC's Emerging Leaders

NMHC's Emerging Leaders were treated to a fascinating look at the changing energy economy and the potential impact of falling oil prices on the Houston economy during a Speaker Series event there on May 28.

The evening featured: Murry Bowden, CEO of The Hanover Company; Bob Harvey, CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership; and Al Hirschberg, Executive Vice President of Conoco Phillips.  It was sponsored by Charter Title.

The main takeaway:  Falling oil prices won't recreate the devastating energy bust Houston experienced in the 1980s.

Back then, the saying was "Stay alive till 85, find a fix in 86 or its chapter 11 in 87," said Hirshberg.  Then we got to 1987 and the economy still wasn't better, so we added "cover your hiney until 1990."

Find out what's different in the oil industry, Houston itself and how the Baby Boomers are an underappreciated apartment demographic.

Pictures from the event are also available on our Flikr site.  Special thanks to Charter Title Company for sponsoring.

September Event Explores the Rise of Crowdfunding

Multifamily capital formation is undergoing innovation and disruption, and crowdfunding is a major driver of that.

Join NMHC's Emerging Leaders for an evening with Ben Miller, co-founder and CEO of Fundrise, to take a look at the future of investing in and financing commercial real estate.

Fundrise crowdfunded the first online equity offering for a real estate property (in DC actually), and now does approximately a project a week and raises almost half a million dollars a day.

The event, which is being sponsored by Greystar, will be held from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm at Provision 14.  Attendance will be limited to encourage high-level networking.
