The U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Housing Finance Survey provides property-level information on characteristics such as size of property, type of mortgage, ownership type, interest rate, and current market value for units in buildings with 2 or more units in them. National summary tables are available, as well as more detailed microdata.
Multifamily Mortgage Lending
National quarterly estimates of multifamily mortgage credit outstanding, and net quarterly change, by lender group, are available from the Federal Reserve. Data can be accessed by selecting Mortgage Debt Outstanding..
Detailed loan-level data on FHA-insured multifamily mortgages is available on the FHA's web site.
HUD also maintains a multifamily GSE database that includes information on number, type and affordability of units and the size of the property, mortgage balance, and type of organization that sold the mortgage to the GSE.
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae also provide loan performance data. Freddie Mac’s “Multifamily Loan Performance Dataset” can be accessed here, and Fannie Mae’s Multifamily Securities Locator Service provides multiple datasets.
Low Income Housing Tax Credits
Information on the low income housing tax credit program comes from several government and trade association sources. An evaluation of the program was completed in 1997 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. The National Council of State Housing Agencies also produces estimates. Detailed project-level information is also available from HUD's Low Income Housing Tax Credit Database.
Property Values
Estimates of values and transactions prices for apartment properties are provided for local areas by private data companies.
