2012 Apartment Industry Policy Agenda

For more than 20 years, the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) and the National Apartment Association (NAA) have partnered in a Joint Legislative Program to advocate on behalf of America’s apartment industry. We’re pleased to present the 2012 Apartment Industry Legislative and Regulatory Priorities. The booklet is a compilation of some of the industry’s most important issues. Specifically, the apartment industry urges Congress to:
  • maintaining a stable source of capital across all markets at all times;
  • ensuring that rental housing is not disadvantaged in any tax reform;
  • and pursuing a balanced regulatory environment that supports the industry’s ability to provide the housing this country needs.
Rental housing is more important than ever.  Americans are increasingly choosing the flexibility and mobility that apartment living provides. In fact, up to half of all new households this decade could be renters – that’s nearly seven million new renter households overall.  Because of that growing demand, apartments are the bright spot of the housing sector—we are actually producing jobs.  In 2012 alone, the apartment industry will create 300,000 new jobs.

More than ever, we need a balanced housing policy that explicitly values the role apartments play in creating vibrant, thriving and sustainable communities.
