NMHC 2011 Annual Report: Renting in America—The Right Choice

Renting gained new respect in 2011.  The media was full of stories about the benefits of renting for residents, investors and the economy at large.

We couldn’t agree more.  Apartments are the right choice for so many reasons right now.

They are the right choice for the economy.  Not only were we the bright spot in the housing sector—actually producing jobs—we are also helping create the more mobile workforce our knowledge-based economy needs.

They are also a smart choice for consumers.  Our society is changing. Married couples with children are now just 21% of our population.  In their place are young adults and empty nesters, two groups that appreciate the convenience, flexibility and amenities of apartments.

It’s a different world after the Great Recession.  Mobility is more important than ever for a generation that believes their careers, not their houses, will determine their financial future.

Renters could make up half of all households created this decade —upwards of seven million new renter households.

This year’s NMHC Annual Report explores these themes. It also details our successes as your voice in Washington last year, our efforts to preserve the industry's access to capital and the many exciting new initiatives we launched.
