The ICC/ANSI A117.1 provides details, dimensions, and specifications to help building designers develop their plans so that the facility will offer unobstructed entry and ease of use to all users with disabilities.
It identifies technical requirements for two kinds of accessible units: fully-accessible Type "A" units; and Type "B" units that comply with HUD's Accessibility Guidelines.
While ANSI A117.1 covers the technical requirements for accessibility, it is incomplete without accompanying "scoping" provisions. These provisions indicate when the technical provisions apply and are contained in the International Building Code (IBC).
The current edition of the standard is ICC A117.1-2009 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. Action to update the standard will begin in 2012. Dates for submitting comments and committee meetings schedules have not been announced.
