Keynote Speaker:

Olga Korbut
Four-Time Gold Olympic Medalist
At the height of the Cold War in 1972, America suddenly fell in love with Russian gymnast Olga Korbut. In spite of Americans Mark Spitz winning 7 gold medals and Frank Shorter winning the marathon, it was Olga Korbut who was the star of the 1972 games. More importantly, she helped melt away a lot of the hatred and fear that Americans had of Russia.
Olga is a highly decorated athlete with four Olympic gold medals to her credit, but it is not this feat for which she is most remembered. The media whirl which surrounded her 1972 Olympic debut caused a surge of young girls to join their local gymnastic clubs, and a sport which had seldom been noticed previously now made headlines. In addition to greatly publicizing gymnastics worldwide, she also contributed to a marked change in the tenor of the sport itself. Prior to 1972, the athletes were generally older and the focus was on elegance rather than acrobatics. In the decade after Korbut’s Olympic debut, the emphasis was reversed.
In 1988, Olga was the first gymnast to be inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and in1994 she was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 greatest athletes.
Immediately following her presentation, meet Olga Korbut as she signs autographs in the Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, October 2.

"Although there are plenty of great organizations out there today, in my mind, NMHC stands tallest. Over the years, The Dinerstein Companies has benefited greatly from NMHC's member services, resources and information. In addition, NMHC has done a terrific job representing our industry on Capitol Hill."
