HUD Guidelines to Evaluating and Controlling Lead Paint

The  HUD Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-Based Paint Hazards in Housing (the Guidelines) provide detailed, comprehensive, technical information on how to identify lead-based paint hazards in housing and how to control such hazards safely and efficiently.

The goal of the Guidelines is to help property owners, private contractors, and Government agencies sharply reduce children’s exposure to lead without unnecessarily increasing the cost of housing.

The Guidelines address lead hazards posed by paint, dust, and soil in the residential environment. Lead exposures from air emissions, Superfund sites, drinking water, ceramics, home (folk) remedies, cosmetics, food, or other sources are not the focus of these Guidelines.

HUD has also published a brochure: Lead Paint Safety: A Field Guide for Painting, Home Maintenance, and Renovation Work.
