2016 NMHC Student Housing Recap
Peak Campus’ Bob Clark (left) leads a discussion of who’s buying and who’s selling assets and portfolios with American Campus Communities’ Bill Bayless (center) and EdR’s Randy Churchey during the 2016 NMHC Student Housing Conference and Exposition.
Last week’s annual NMHC Student Housing Conference and Exposition in New Orleans drew the biggest crowd ever in the event’s 14-year history. The student housing market continues to perform extremely well, driving appetite for more investment in the sector from capital sources, as well as supplier partners.

This hunger for deals was a common theme on the program, which covered the sector’s demand outlook, capital flows, design trends, operational challenges and more. Given this climate, the fast-pitch DealTank competition was another success, with four of the competitors earning invites to another round of discussion with executives from the judges panel.

The exhibit hall also provided a great opportunity for student housing executives to network and explore new products and services. Here are just a few of the main themes and key takeaways.
Top Trends
The steady influx of capital into the sector is driving transactions and pricing-and lowering investor return expectations.
Foreign Capital Targets Student Housing
Foreign investors step into the capital fray, but its slow and easy as they look to partner with strong operators.
Student housing operations executives dish on four big things that keep them up at night-and the solutions to mitigate those issues.
Execs Scout for Better Student Housing Returns
