The apartment industry fired on all cylinders in 2012. The number of renter households increased for the eighth straight year, and new apartment construction rebounded in earnest. But the need for apartments is greater still.
An increasing population, a large number of young people entering the housing market and the continuing growth in single-parent and single-person households all underscore the need for apartments. Up to half of all new households created this decade-that’s upward of seven million households-could be renters.
Given long-term apartment demand fundamentals and growing opportunity in the market, NMHC recently invested in a number of new, strategic initiatives related to advocacy, education, public relations and research-all to raise awareness of the strength of the apartment industry and the benefits of the housing choice you provide for 35 million Americans.
This year’s Annual Report catalogues these efforts, initiatives and ensuing successes. More than a dozen legislative and regulatory accomplishments, an impressive $1 million in PAC contributions, record attendance at NMHC events, groundbreaking industry research and a strategic, multimedia public relations campaign-these are just a few of the highlights from the year.
And these efforts are paying off. The industry’s profile among key policymakers, regulators, business leaders, industry peers and other influencers is on the rise thanks to the combined dedication of our leadership team, staff, supporters and, of course, you, our core members.
