The International Code Council (ICC) recently held the committee action hearings for several of the 2015 model codes in Dallas, TX. This document highlights key outcomes of interest to apartment firms. In a break with past practice, the ICC has split the 15 I-Codes into three groups-Groups A, B and C-with different development timetables for each. NMHC/NAA’s efforts in this second round, Group B, focused primarily on the International Energy Conservation Code - commercial and residential sections (IECC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Property Maintenance Code (IMPC), International Existing Building Code, and International Residential Code.
Throughout the code development process, NMHC/NAA staff work with code consultants and collaborate with other industry representatives to improve existing code provisions and oppose unnecessary escalations in construction costs. These efforts, as a result of the combined effort, resulted in a number of hearing decisions favorable to multifamily firms.
The action taken during these hearings will form the basis of the Final Code Action Hearings scheduled for October 2013. Those hearings will determine the items included in the 2015 code edition, but these codes will not be published until 2015 when the Group C codes are also completed.
