The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently published notice of a new proposed rule to Affirmatively Further Fair Housing (AFFH) in the Federal Register. Drafted in response to a 2010 GAO report and feedback from stakeholders, the proposed rule aims to provide states and local governments that receive federal support and public housing agencies with better guidance, data collection and assessment tools to conduct fair housing assessments. With more resources, HUD expects program participants will be able to better identify fair housing issues and patterns of activity and develop strategies to overcome these obstacles and further fair housing goals.
This rule does not appear to affect private industry. NMHC/NAA continue to review the proposed rule and will determine the need to comment. More information on the proposed rule, including background resources and a prototype geospatial tool, is available here.
