There are only fourteen working days until the July 4 recess, and less than thirty until the five-week August recess. With a short timeframe, the President’s legislative agenda continues to struggle in Congress as GOP lawmakers look to re-start plans for major changes to health care, tackle infrastructure and reform the tax code.
Therefore, it is likely that Congress leaves for the August recess without repealing and replacing Obamacare, without passing an infrastructure package and without progress on tax reform. While there is little NMHC can do about the Congressional dysfunction, it does allow our team the opportunity to educate and enlighten members of Congress on how these major issues effect the multifamily industry.
With strong member support of NMHC PAC, our top-notch government affairs team at NMHC is able to participate in a variety of fundraiser events, giving them the chance to spend precious time with key Members of Congress and to discuss the specifics issues important to the industry such as tax reform, housing finance reform and infrastructure. Despite the challenges facing policymakers, these issues are front and center and critical decisions are being made as legislative proposals are being contemplated and drafted.
To date this year, NMHC PAC ranks second in disbursements for real estate association PACs. NMHC PAC continues to have the strength to tackle critical issues seriously impacting the apartment industry’s success, to build important relationships with legislators and to educate elected officials on how their decisions directly impact our ability to generate jobs and grow the economy.
It will continue to be a busy and productive time in the coming months here at NMHC headquarters.
