NMHC PAC had an active August gearing up for the upcoming NMHC Fall Board
Meetings from September 15-17. Our focus also continues to be on bringing in
PAC money earlier than in past years.
Ultimately, this early funding helps us in supporting the federal legislators who understand our industry. Fundraising overall is going strong. As of September 1, 954 employees from 115 NMHC member firms and NMHC staff have contributed $980,690 to NMHC PAC. This is 78% of the PAC Committee’s $1.25m fundraising goal for this off-election year. That’s compared to this time last year when NMHC PAC raised $840,640.

PAC Dollars Action Plan
On the spending front, the NMHC PAC and government affairs staff are executing the 2015/2016 PAC Disbursement Budget. The budget outlines the plan to spend approximately $2.7 million this election cycle. The bulk of the contributions are slated for key Congressional leadership and committees with purview over critical legislative and regulatory issues such as GSE and tax reform, energy efficiency and building codes, HUD programs and budget issues, privatized military housing, and fair housing.
To date, NMHC PAC has disbursed $1,029,500 to 220 Congressional campaigns, leadership PACs and party committees. Many of these contributions continue to be made to lawmakers at small, targeted fundraising events hosted by real estate industry groups.
Personal Dollar Campaign
This year has seen an uptick in the activities of the NMHC Personal Dollar Campaign. This program allows NMHC to leverage the level of political support attributed to the multifamily industry. That’s beyond the current Federal Election Commission (FEC) limits that govern NMHC PAC disbursements. The personal dollar campaign also helps maintain the visibility of NMHC in a political environment that is increasingly crowded with Super PACs and other special interest spending.
Earlier this year, industry leaders Clyde Holland and Tom Parsons hosted a personal dollar fundraiser in support of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The breakfast event raised $44,000.
Plans are in the works for the next personal dollar event to be held in Chicago on Monday, October 5 for Senators Thune and Moran, two of NMHC's identified personal dollar campaign candidates. The Host committee consists of; Bob DeWitt, Mike Miller, Tom Moran, Greg Mutz, David Neithercut, David Schwartz and Jerry Wilkinson. Other events are in the works, including one for Senator Johnny Isaskson (R-GA) and in Denver a breakfast fundraiser for Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO).
