The International Code Council (ICC) is in the process of updating the complete family of 2012 International Model Building Codes for publication in 2015. For the first time, ICC split the 15 codes into three groups-Groups A, B and C-with varying development timetables for each group. The revision of the Group A codes was completed in October 2012, and included the International Building Code and three other model codes. This month, ICC begins the update process for Group B codes, which include several apartment sector priorities, including the energy code, fire code and seven other model codes.
Proposed changes for Group B codes were due Jan. 3, 2013. These proposals will be made publically available in March, followed by code development hearings in April. NMHC/NAA expect that numerous issues of concern to the apartment industry will be addressed at the hearings, including possible building retrofit requirements, fire safety enhancements, and increased energy efficiency measures. NMHC/NAA continues to work with the ICC and other stakeholders to ensure that the unique needs of the multifamily housing sector are addressed in the updated building codes.
