HUD Develops New Smoke-Free Housing Tools
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), along with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and several health advocates, launched a new set of tools to encourage and guide private owners of federally assisted multifamily housing and public housing authorities to adopt smoke-free policies. Such policies both protect residents from the dangers of second-hand smoke and reduce property maintenance costs.

HUD Notice: Smoke-Free Public Housing
Reflecting a small, but growing trend of smoke-free apartments, on July 17, 2009, HUD released a notice (PIH-2009-21) “strongly” encouraging public housing authorities (PHAs) to implement non-smoking policies in public housing.
According to HUD, non-smoking policies would improve indoor air quality in the aging public housing stock without requiring the retrofitting of public housing.
