The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) and the National Apartment Association (NAA) applaud today’s reintroduction of the Choice in Affordable Housing Act (H.R. 1981/S.890), bipartisan and bicameral legislation that provides critically needed reforms to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. This important bill was reintroduced by Senators Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Representatives Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.-17) and Emanuel Cleaver (Mo.-5).
NMHC and NAA have long supported the voluntary HCV program as a powerful tool in addressing our nation’s housing affordability crisis. The current program, however, remains overregulated, plagued with red tape and burdensome requirements. The Choice in Affordable Housing Act would encourage greater housing provider participation in the program and ultimately provide greater housing stability for low- and moderate-income renters.
“NMHC and our members have long supported the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program and believe it to be one of the most effective means of addressing our nation’s affordable housing needs, supporting mixed-income communities and improving housing opportunity and availability throughout the country,” said Sharon Wilson Géno, NMHC President.
“As communities across our country continue to face longstanding housing affordability challenges, the Housing Choice Voucher program has the potential to be an incredibly effective short-term solution,” said NAA President & CEO Bob Pinnegar. “The Choice in Affordable Housing Act rightly eases regulatory burdens and removes duplicative requirements, increasing housing provider participation in the program and improving housing outcomes for renters. NAA thanks Sens. Cramer and Coons and Reps. Lawler and Cleaver for their steadfast leadership on this important issue.”
NMHC and NAA continue to advance sustainable and responsible solutions to address our nation’s housing crisis. Working together with policymakers, we can bolster affordability and ensure a stronger rental housing infrastructure for the future.
For more than 27 years, the National Apartment Association (NAA) and the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) have partnered on behalf of America's apartment industry. Drawing on the knowledge and policy expertise of staff in Washington, D.C., as well as the advocacy power of 141 NAA state and local affiliated associations, NAA and NMHC provide a single voice for developers, owners and operators of multifamily rental housing. One-third of all Americans rent their housing, and 40 million of them live in an apartment home.
