WASHINGTON, D.C. - Statement from the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) and National Apartment Association (NAA) by Cindy Chetti, NMHC Senior Vice President of Government Affairs:
“We applaud President Obama’s renewed efforts to jumpstart the economy and create new jobs outlined in his State of the Union address. In a newly-released report, the apartment industry and our residents support more than 25 million jobs across the country - that’s a $1.1 trillion economic impact to the country.
“Apartments help local businesses grow and communities thrive. However, the industry will not be able to meet the nation’s demand for apartment homes without long-term housing finance reform. This requires access to capital in all markets at all times.
“The country, and with it, our housing preferences, are changing. For the 35 million Americans who call apartments home now and the millions more who will move into apartments over the next decade, it’s time for our housing policy to change as well.”
