Washington, D.C. – As part of the National Multifamily Housing Council’s (NMHC) long-standing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) effort, the organization will now offer two-year complimentary Advisory Committee level memberships to self-identified woman- and minority-owned apartment firms, industry suppliers and certain 501(c)(3) nonprofits that represent or prioritize the interests of those underrepresented groups.
This effort is among NMHC’s commitments to action specified in the Council’s Industry Framework for Racial Equity and Economic Inclusion, which was recently developed by NMHC’s Racial Equity Taskforce including the Real Estate Executive Council. The Industry Framework identifies specific goals, key stakeholders, recommended industry actions and NMHC’s commitments to action.
“Offering complimentary memberships is a clear sign of NMHC’s commitment to expanding diversity and opportunity within the multifamily industry,” said Kenny Emson, NMHC’s Chief Operating Officer. “While extending this reach will take time, we hope that this program will broaden the diversity of the industry, give a platform to new voices and help those who might have previously not had access to create new relationships and foster expanded prospects.”
“NMHC’s expanded membership development strategy is part of NMHC’s Industry Framework for Racial Equity and Economic Inclusion commitment, and directly aims to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as a business imperative key to innovation and success,” said Betsy Feigin Befus, NMHC’s General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. “Over the coming months, we hope that we will significantly expand the number of woman- and minority-owned firms among the NMHC membership to create a richer, more productive industry marketplace, and advance meaningful opportunity for economic inclusion.”
